The Pioneers, Frontiersman and The Women
It was said they lived off the land as best they could as they traveled westward. Horses and oxen were valuable, so most
walked instead of riding. The farther west they traveled it was said the grasses were "as high as a man on horseback."
A fifth of the pioneers were women with children, sometimes outnumbering the men. Not all travelers had wagons,
as some traveled by horse and some shared with other families due to the cost. The wagons, livestock, goods and equipment
had a value of as much as $700,000. This was not the value in Missouri nor even in California, but somewhere in between where
goods had a high cost of transport. This value was high enough for the Mormons to attack a wagon train in Mountain Meadows
and steal everything.

The shopping list above represents the food available. There was no refrigeration and canning was not generally available.
This food was augmented by the hunters as well as children gathering berries or finding roots such as the Indian Turnip. The
hunters mostly found small game but, for the most part, the travelers ate bisquits or hoe-cakes and beans; three times a day
and day-after-day. Other than salt, the only spice was gunpowder.

Stephen A White as born sometime around 1794 in the Yadkin Valley of North Carolina. We don't know his parents yet or
much about him. What we do know is he was probably a fur trader, frontiersman. Rumours are he married an Indian and had one
daughter before he married our Nancy Parkinson, having seven more known children. We find Stephen in 1843 in Fayette, Wisconsin
and in the census records of 1850 in Wisconsin, as we come forward we then find him and his family in Sangamon,
Illinois in 1860.
Stephen's wife Nancy was born to William Parkinsion and Elizabeth West. William was born in Shenandoah, Virginia about
1776 to Peter Parkinson, a revolutionary patriot, and Mary Morgan cousin to the Daniel Morgan Boone.

Cousin to Daniel Boone, son of Peter Parkinson. Daniel was born 20 October 1790 Carter County, Tennessee. Col
PARKINSON Daniel Morgan is the great grand uncle of Nancy Helen WHITE who is mother to Hazel Clara MILLER FREDRICKS.
Accounts of the contributions of Colonel Daniel Morgan Parkinson to the early history of Wisconsin can be found in several
hstory books. His father Peter Parkinson was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and died when Daniel was merely two years
old. This left Peter's wife, born Mary Morgan, with seven small children to support and raise in the wilderness. Daniel learned
well from her, as is quite evident when you read his autobiograpical sketches found in "Wisconsin Historical Collections Vol
ii" titled "Pioneer Life in Wisconsin". Daniel left his native Tennesee and migrated to Illinois, residing in Madison and
Sangamon counties for several years before moving to Wisconsin. He was quite highly esteemed for his contributions to the
commuity, both in militia action durng Indian wars and politically in early state legislature.
Daniel Died 1 October 1868 in WIllow Springs, Lafayette Co., Wisconsin.

Mary Morgan 1856-1818. Married our revolutionary patriot Peter Parkinson. Mary was possibly daughter of James Morgan
and Rebecca Ryan. Mary was also sister to Brigadier General Daniel Morgan 1736-1802.
Daniel Morgan was one of those popular people during the revolution, elected from Virginia to the fifth Congress after
an illustrious after commanding the Virginia Militia ordered out by President Washington in 1794 to suppress the Whisky Insurrection
in Pennsylvania. Daniel served with the Colonial forces during the French and Indian War, and was buried
with military honors

Mary Morgan's grandfather, Edward Morgan married Margaret Jarman. Edward and Margaret had three known children, one of
which was a girl child named Sarah 1700-1777. Sarah Morgan married Squire Boone in 1720 and went on to have eleven children.
Squire and Sarah's sixth child was named Daniel 1734-1820. Daniel was a Kentucky pioneer, Revolutionary
soldier, path finder, Kentucky legislator. Mary and Daniel were cousins.
