I was notified by Richard Cottrell by email that a new DNA listing he has setup at DNA Heritage ...is now available for those wishing to have their Kemp DNA tested. Below is what he has posted to me... and I wanted to make sure everyone out there was well aware of this opportunity.

I hope many Kemp's out there will take part in this testing! Let's all of us partake and take the doubt out of our genealogical research!

To All:

The default marker order is 43 markers however an individual can order
whatever level of marker test can best be purchased by the person.

Now a little bit about why I chose DNA Heritage for the company to use for the Kemp Surname Y-DNA Project:

Their 43 marker test is the highest resolution set of markers available in genetic genealogy research. That amount of markers
also gives two individuals sharing the same surname and matching,or not matching, the greatest
reliability of indeed being related or not related.

Here is typical 43 marker results (these are real results) for two individuals:

Now looking at the above 43 marker results matching you can readily see there is a lot of markers and the two individuals
                                    match on each specific marker.

Also since they match then they will be related, but how are they related.

Are the two individuals brothers, or uncle and nephew, or father and son, or grandfather and grandson, or cousins, etc.

Well you can not tell the relation just from the results. That is where the paperwork (documentation) part of genealogy is
                                    so invaluable.

Paperwork genealogy defines and establishs the relation and the dna results confirm the relation.

I will be explaining more in other posts.

The actual submission of a DNA sample by an individual is by simply using 3
q-tip type of swabs, in which the individual just lightly scrapes the inside
                                    of their cheeks.

participate in soon?

Right now there is no MtDNA (female DNA test) being done. The reason being is
that particular test is a little bit more complicated to apply for
                                    genealogical research of a surname.

>How does this work?

Actually it is fairly simple. An individual simply joins the project then
orders the kit, then submits the DNA sample back along with payment then is
                                    given a set of results.

>Who's DNA is tested against
                                    who's?

Whatever male individuals by the name of Kemp join the project then their
results will be compared for matching or not matching. In the event the
indiduals match then they are placed in a group.

>Is there a possibility of
testing one's DNA to any surviving DNA from say

Yes if an individual joins the project and has a paper trail back to the John
Kemp (1380) Archbishop of Canterbury or any known Kemp relation ( say a
brother, or uncle, cousin, etc.) to that John Kemp then yes it is possible to
                                    compare DNA results.

many questions about various lines connected to
                                    >each other or not!

That is exactly my thinking for starting the project.

Having the paper trail (i.e, documentation on any given lineage) is really an
extremely important and key ingredient to have even with the DNA testing.

I say that because the paper trail actually defines and establishs the
relations of a lineage and the DNA testing will confirm the relations of the
                                    lineage.

So it is good to have both working hand in hand for research of the ancestor.

                                    Richard
